Kumho Sunny new ethanol resistant PMMA material

Acrylic is polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA for short. It is a high molecular polymer polymerized from methyl methacrylate. It is also called organic glass. It has high transparency, high weather resistance, and high hardness. , easy processing and molding and other advantages, it is a frequently used glass alternative material. The relative molecular mass of PMMA is about 2 million, and the chains forming the molecules are relatively soft. Therefore, PMMA has relatively high strength, and its tensile and impact resistance is 7 to 18 times higher than ordinary glass. When it is used as organic glass, even if it is broken, it will not produce fragments like ordinary glass.

PMMA is currently the transparent polymer material with the best optical properties, with a light transmittance of 92%, which is higher than that of glass and PC. This has also become the most important basic characteristic for many of its applications. PMMA's weather resistance is also second to none among commonly used plastics. Under the automotive exterior weather resistance test standard SAE J2527, it can meet the weather resistance test of 3500-4000 KJ/m2, which is much higher than ordinary PC, PA and other plastics. In addition, PMMA's pencil hardness can reach 2H, which is much higher than other ordinary plastics such as PC, and has good surface scratch resistance. Therefore, PMMA is often used in car lights, instrument parts, optical and 3C electronic product lenses, decorative gifts, advertising light boxes, nameplates, etc.

With the upgrading of consumption, everyone uses alcohol to disinfect electronic products and daily necessities. Ordinary PMMA easily absorbs ethanol (alcohol), causing the surface to swell and turn white, and cause stress cracking, causing damage to the product. In order to solve this problem, Kumho Rili has launched a series of ethanol resistant PMMA products.

At present, Kumho Sunny ethanol-resistant PMMA series products include: PMMA HAM8580-I (low toughening, ethanol resistance); MK6136/MK6146 (toughening, ethanol resistance); ethanol-resistant PMMA MK6936/MK6946 (ethanol resistance).

We tested their physical properties, ethanol resistance, weather resistance, scratch resistance, chemical resistance, and heat resistance:

1.Compared with conventional PMMA, the transparent toughened series can improve ethanol resistance, spray painting, and single-piece tooling. The toughness of ethanol-resistant PMMA is equivalent to that of conventional PMMA, but its ethanol resistance is better. The chemical resistance of PMMA has been greatly improved: the water resistance, oil resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance, ethanol resistance, fragrance resistance and other properties of PMMA materials have been improved, and the problems of whitening and cracking of ordinary PMMA products during alcohol disinfection have been completely solved. It solves the industry problem that PMMA materials are not resistant to alcohol and fills the market gap.

2.PMMA has high transparency and gloss. PMMA has excellent optical properties and the light transmittance is the best among all plastics. The transparency of PMMA is as high as 92%. Therefore, PMMA is often used as a substitute for glass in the construction industry and billboards, car taillights, etc. Since these products are exposed to sunlight, wind and rain for a long time, many people are more concerned about the weather resistance of PMMA, and the physical properties and appearance will not be affected. From the data, we can see that both ethanol-resistant PMMA and transparent toughened series PMMA materials can meet the weather-resistant requirements for conventional exterior decoration.

3.Ethanol-resistant PMMA and transparent toughened series materials can meet the contact requirements of common chemical-resistant reagents.

4.Ethanol-resistant PMMA and transparent toughened series materials also have good scratch resistance and can meet common scratch requirements for exterior decoration. PMMA has a high surface hardness and is not easily scratched, which is crucial for protecting the clarity and accuracy of optical instruments.

5.The thermal properties of ethanol-resistant PMMA are comparable to conventional PMMA. When exposed to high temperatures, the performance of some plastic materials will be affected, and their appearance will deform and yellow, affecting the transparent appearance of PMMA. However, after testing, we found that ethanol-resistant PMMA will not have any impact.

At present, Kumho Sunny’s ethanol-resistant PMMA has been used in the automotive industry.

For example, ethanol-resistant PMMA HAM8580-I is used in the C100 hood trim strips of Hongqi cars and the Hongqi C229 hood trim strips, which solves the problem that the back of the car logo will not crack when sprayed with metallic paint or washed.

PMMA MK6136 is used in  key shells. It will not crack when dropped, and it is chemical resistant and will not crack;

PMMA MK6146 is used in the two-color Arise turn signal, which solves the problem of alcohol resistance and no cracking;

The taillight trim of Volvo EX30 is replaced by conventional PMMA. The outer panel is MK6936/inner panel PMMA/ASA M1800, which improves car wash cracking and material brittleness. The inner panel can be made into a snap-on toughness structure. At the same time, it can improve product car wash cracking at normal and high temperatures. Significantly improved.
